Actuary

Head of Actuarial Function | Insurance Company in Brussels

For one of our clients, we are currently looking for a Head of Actuarial Function to join a leading insurance company based in Brussels.

Our client is a major player in the Belgian insurance market, combining a strong local presence with the expertise and resources of an international insurance group. Active across Life, Health and Non-Life insurance, the company operates in a highly regulated and sophisticated environment and continuously invests in strengthening its actuarial and risk management capabilities.

This senior position offers the opportunity to take ownership of a key independent control function, lead a team of actuarial professionals and work directly with senior management, Board-level stakeholders, auditors and regulators.

With exposure across the entire insurance business, this role is particularly suited to an experienced actuary looking to combine technical expertise, strategic oversight, leadership and governance responsibilities.

Role

As Head of Actuarial Function, you will lead a team of approximately four actuarial professionals and ensure the effective execution of the company's independent Actuarial Function.

You will oversee a broad range of actuarial topics across Life, Health and P&C, including reserving, pricing, profitability, underwriting, reinsurance and risk management.

Operating independently from the business, you will provide objective opinions and recommendations on key actuarial matters and ensure compliance with the requirements arising from Solvency II and the relevant Belgian regulatory framework.

The position offers significant senior-level exposure, with a functional reporting line to the Chief Risk Officer as well as interaction with the Group Chief Actuary.

Key Responsibilities

Actuarial Governance & Independent Oversight

  • Ensure that the Actuarial Function fulfils its responsibilities in accordance with Solvency II and applicable Belgian regulatory requirements.
  • Provide an independent opinion on the quality of methodologies, assumptions and data used to calculate technical provisions.
  • Review technical provisions under both the Solvency II framework and Belgian standards.
  • Challenge actuarial methodologies and established practices where appropriate.
  • Formulate clear recommendations and escalate material actuarial concerns when necessary.
  • Maintain close interaction with internal and external auditors as well as regulatory authorities.

Pricing, Products & Profitability

  • Provide an independent actuarial opinion when new insurance products are launched or existing products are materially modified.
  • Assess the appropriateness of pricing, reserving and reinsurance approaches for new and existing products.
  • Review the profitability of different insurance products on an annual basis.
  • Assess financial and actuarial performance within both market-consistent and statutory accounting frameworks.
  • Provide an independent view on profit-sharing and discount policies and their compliance with applicable regulations.

Underwriting, Risk & Reinsurance

  • Review existing underwriting limits and assess their appropriateness from an actuarial and risk perspective.
  • Provide recommendations and advice regarding risk acceptance and underwriting practices.
  • Assess the adequacy and effectiveness of existing reinsurance arrangements.
  • Work closely with actuarial, risk and business teams on topics covering pricing, reserving, value management and risk management.
  • Contribute to strengthening the company's overall actuarial and risk governance framework.

Model Validation & Risk Governance

  • Coordinate the local Model Validation activities as an independent function supporting the Chief Risk Officer.
  • Contribute to the oversight and challenge of models used across the organization.
  • Participate in senior risk governance discussions and provide an independent actuarial perspective on strategic matters.
  • Maintain a direct escalation line towards senior executive governance bodies when material actuarial issues require attention.

Leadership & Stakeholder Management

  • Lead, coach and develop a team of approximately four actuarial professionals.
  • Coordinate activities across the Actuarial Function and ensure a consistently high level of technical quality.
  • Work closely with actuarial departments across the organization as well as the Group Actuarial Function.
  • Act as a senior actuarial counterpart for the Chief Risk Officer, senior management and other key stakeholders.
  • Contribute actively to the development and animation of the broader actuarial community within the organization.
  • Communicate complex actuarial matters clearly and confidently to both technical and non-technical senior stakeholders.

Profile

  • Master's degree in Actuarial Science or an equivalent quantitative qualification.
  • Extensive professional experience within the insurance industry, with strong expertise in Life and/or Non-Life insurance.
  • In-depth understanding of Solvency II and the key financial and actuarial performance indicators applicable to insurance products.
  • Broad understanding of the insurance business environment and its regulatory requirements.
  • Strong actuarial and analytical capabilities combined with a critical and independent mindset.
  • Proven management and leadership capabilities, with the ability to successfully lead and develop a team.
  • Strong sense of integrity, particularly important within an independent control function.
  • Excellent strategic vision and ability to assess actuarial matters beyond their purely technical implications.
  • Able to challenge, explain, influence, negotiate and take a clear position when required.
  • Comfortable interacting with senior management, governance bodies, auditors and regulators.
  • Open-minded and willing to challenge established methodologies and working practices.
  • Professional command of Dutch and/or French, combined with excellent English communication skills, both written and spoken.

Offer

  • A permanent senior leadership position within one of the major players in the Belgian insurance market.
  • Ownership of a key independent control function, giving you significant influence over the company's actuarial and risk governance.
  • Broad actuarial exposure across Life, Health and P&C, rather than being limited to a single insurance line.
  • Direct interaction with the Chief Risk Officer, senior management and Group-level actuarial leadership.
  • Exposure to Executive and Board-level Risk Committees, providing genuine visibility within the organization's governance structure.
  • The opportunity to lead and further develop an experienced actuarial team.
  • A highly strategic environment where you can combine actuarial expertise, leadership, governance and business understanding.
  • Close interaction with auditors and regulators, positioning you at the heart of the company's actuarial and regulatory framework.
  • Strong opportunities for continued professional development within a large and sophisticated insurance organization.
  • Flexible and hybrid working arrangements, supporting a sustainable balance between professional responsibilities and personal life.
  • Access to training, well-being initiatives and activities supporting both your professional and personal development.

An Attractive Compensation Package

  • A highly competitive senior-level remuneration package, aligned with your experience, expertise and level of responsibility.
  • Individual and collective performance incentives, complementing your fixed compensation.
  • An electric company car or mobility budget, allowing you to choose the mobility solution best suited to your needs.
  • Meal vouchers and eco vouchers, complemented by a flexible cafeteria plan.
  • Comprehensive group, hospitalization and outpatient insurance, with attractive possibilities for family coverage.
  • Preferential conditions on a broad range of insurance products.
  • A particularly generous annual leave package, supporting an excellent work-life balance.
  • A flexible 35-hour working week combined with hybrid working possibilities.
  • Access to well-being programs, workplace sports activities and continuous training opportunities.
